Resources for Congregations

Global Warming Workshops

Caring For Creation Can Save Your Congregation Money! Learn how to reduce your congregation’s energy use!

EMI’s Global Warming Project is offering a one-hour (length is flexible) workshop on environmental and financial stewardship around the state this spring, summer, and fall. The workshop addresses the science of global warming, why global warming is an issue of faith, and how congregations can respond by reducing energy use in their place of worship. Reducing energy use abates greenhouse gas emissions and cuts large energy bills—save money while saving creation!

The workshop is appropriate for fellowship retreats, adult education forums, youth groups, committee meetings, etc. There is no cost for the workshop; travel reimbursement is greatly appreciated, but not required. To schedule call EMI.

Global Warming Video

The video "God’s Creation and Global Warming" describes the science of global warming as well as why global warming is an issue of faith. The video gives an interfaith perspective and is twelve minutes long. "God’s Creation and Global Warming" is an excellent springboard for discussion in adult education classes, evening forums, senior high fellowship gatherings, or ecumenical gatherings. The video was created by the National Council of Churches of Christ and costs $2. To order call EMI.

Energy Stewardship Congregations

The Energy Stewardship Congregation program, through the National Council of Churches of Christ, is available to help congregations assess their current energy use and implement many specific measures to reduce energy use in heating and cooling, lighting, and refrigeration. For more information call 1-800-288-1346 or EMI.

Adult Education Curriculum

"It’s God’s World: Christians, Care for Creation and Global Warming," is a bible study manual created by the National Council of Churches of Christ, which explores the meaning of stewardship. The manual includes: readings on the basic science of global climate change, biblical references that help us understand why global climate change is an issue of faith, and provoking questions which lead the participants to really challenge their faith and consequently their life styles. The bible study can easily be led by a layperson who is not an expert in global climate change. "It’s God’s World" is very appropriate to be used during young-adult or adult education classes or congregational retreats or workshops. The curriculum is designed for five sessions, but can easily be rearranged to fit into more or less sessions. To order call EMI.
