As I see It: My Earthly Responsibility Curriculum
Nannette Banks

Curriculum Theme:

“All life is one. The world is one home. All are members of one family. All creation is one organic whole. No person is independent of that whole. The earth is a sacred gift to be cherished, nurtured, and shared by all.” - Jeff Knaebel in an article entitled, Some Thoughts On Civil Disobedience: My Duties and Responsibilities (lewrockwell.com), published October 8, 2006

“O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is thy name in all the earth! Thou whose glory above the heavens is chanted by the mouth of babes and infants, thou hast founded a bulwark because of thy foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast established; what is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou dost care for him? Yet thou hast made him little less than God, and dost crown him with glory and honor. Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the sea. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is thy name in all the earth!” – Psalm 8: 1 – 9, Revised Standard Version Bible

“The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein; for he has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the rivers.” - Psalm 24: 1 -2, Revised Standard Version Bible

Topic:

Global Warming: What Role do I play?

Session Learners:

20 multigenerational participants

Basic Concept:

Global warming began with one action (natural and or man made) at a time and now we are to reduce its effects one action at a time.

Objectives:

  • To identify our roles as servants of God as it relates to nature
  • To identify and adjust personal action that may increase the effects of global warming
  • To self reflect and identify where we stand in the world in relationship to others

Background for Teachers:

  • This session was inspired by Globe 13, Global Reflection by Artist: Micki Le Mieux, which can be found on page 13 of the cool globes guide book.
  • A cd should be playing at a whisper in the background, the three songs I would chose is Imagine by John Lennon, What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong and We are the World by Live aid (the songs are to be the choice of the instructor the only restriction is the song must address our responsibility or view of the world).
  • As the participants enter give them each a color coded strip with a table number 1 -5 (This is very intentional, so you will need to have volunteers welcoming the participants and distributing the strip). This technique is to ensure that not all older folk or younger folk sit together. The class is limited to 20 participants therefore you will need four colors and five strips in each color.
  • Have five beach balls, one on each table along with two rolls of clear tape on each table.
  • This topic is one that is overwhelming and will cause many to believe that there is nothing I can do about this. To avoid that attitude begin the session by writing on the board three categories; Transportation, Garbage and Household Cleaning Items.
  • Distribute index cards to each participant corresponding to the categories on the board and have them to list the various modes of transportation they use on a daily, weekly, monthly basis, what does there garbage consist of and what household cleaning products they use not the name brand but list glass cleaner, oven cleaner, bleach etc…and tell how often these products are used.
  • It is important to note that there is a great global warming debate as to whether global warming is natural or man made. The answer is not definitive, but we must as human beings take precaution to ensure that all is being done to reduce its global effects.*
  • Human causes: Carbon dioxide (CO 2), e.g. exhaust from cars and power plants. Natural causes: Some claim the sun is getting hotter.*
  • Can we stop global warming? It's too late for that, but we can slow it down and lessen its effects. CO 2 does not last as long in the air as was once thought, so the big problem is slowing human use of fossil energy, especially coal. (Especially since CO 2 goes into the ocean and destroys coral reefs.)*
  • This information was gathered from zfacts.com

Methods of Teaching and Learning:

  • Visual/artistic: Beach Ball (represents the world), index card information, black board categories
  • Oral/Linguistic: Facts will be given and those who wish to note take or offer information they have will be encouraged (not to exceed 10 minutes including the facts)
  • Musical: Imagine by John Lennon, What a wonderful World by Louis Armstrong and We are the World by Live aid
  • Interpersonal: There will be opportunity for small group project and discussion

Process of Teaching and Learning:

Beginning of Session:

  • As the participants enter give them each a color coded strip with a table number 1-5
  • Call their attention to the board, explain the index cards relation and ask them to complete the index card information
  • Participants will share one item from each category
  • Once the board list has been completed, have each to tape there list to the beach ball, there maybe overlapping which is good

Developing the Session:

  • facts about global warming will be given
  • Talk about adjectives God uses to describe our relationship to nature i.e. dominion, shepherd etc…
  • Just ask this yes or no question have we kept to that call? Have one person to speak on behalf of yes and one person speak on behalf of no.
  • Then discuss our role as it relates global warming; it may become a more narrowed topic regarding recycling, emission reduction etc…
  • There will then be a 3-5 minute discussion among the small group creating three ways in which their table can personally reduce the effects of global warming

Concluding the Session:

  • Each table will then show there beach ball to class and then state have they have realistically decided to adjust their actions to reduce the effects of global warming
  • Talk about how each of the beach balls represent our connectedness and how our actions to reduce the effects are connected
  • List on the board future strategies to be used as we seek to reduce the effects of global warming

Room Set Up:

  • four large tables, five chairs at each
  • Cd player with cd playing

Resources:

  • 4 Tables and 20 Chairs
  • Cd and Cd player
  • construction paper strips 4 colors, 5 each color
  • chalk board or flip chart
  • 4 beach balls
  • tape, index cards
  • markers or pens
  • global warming facts
