I. Worship related to care for the earth:
The community celebrates special days or rites for the earth, such as a planting of the trees through a partnership with the UCC Mass Releaf Ministry. They also celebrate Earth Day/Earth Week and have a Blessing of the Vegetable Garden service.
II. Curriculum designed to prepare students for environmental ministry:
Courses, entire or in part, are devoted to eco-theology, environmental justice, and creation theology. Field education may be fulfilled with an ecology ministry site and workshops, lectures, conferences, and retreats are available to those interested in learning more about creation care.
III. Training for environmental ministry in seminary life:
Other groups or committees such as the Board of Trustees or the development staff experience training on the seminary’s green commitment. There are opportunities for students to work in environmental projects while at seminary.
IV. Organization structure caring for creation:
The seminary has an Ecology Ministry Committee comprised of faculty, staff, students, and trustees.
V. Caring for creation in practices related to building and grounds:
Building construction and renovation using federal “green building” guidelines is under development, as well as geo-thermal heating and cooling sources being explored. The developing strategic plan includes energy conservation practices, paper conservation policies, water conservation practices, avoidance of herbicides and pesticides, and waste reduction practices. Local and organic food purchases occur through Sodexho food services. Part of the seminary’s land is used for community gardening and there is a future goal to achieve wildlife backyard habitat certification.
VI. Public Ministry for Environmental Justice:
The seminary joins with other seminaries and agencies to carry out seminary function related to care for creation or to address local environmental issues.
