Green Seminary Certification Program

[N. B. This Section is Under Construction and the Program is being developed]

The Green Seminary Certification Program (GSCP) seeks to encourage, guide, and recognize seminaries that significantly engage in the process of incorporating care for creation into the life and programs of their seminary. Here are the steps to become certified.

  1. Make a request: Submit a letter of request to become a candidate to be certified by the GSCP. This letter should be signed by the President, the Academic Dean, the Chair of the Board of Trustees (or her/his representative), and the faculty/staff person who will give leadership to the process. The latter person will serve as contact person with the GSCP. Provide all contact information.

  2. Develop an Action Plan: The GSCP will send you materials for filling in an action plan and the GSCP standards expected. The plan will follow the model of five areas: Worship, Education, Building and Grounds, Discipleship, and Public Ministry. The plan invites you to choose some options from each area. When you have completed the planning process, return the action form to the GSCP. This plan will be considered by an independent ecumenical panel of seminary people representing several denominations. They will approve the plan or return it with suggestions for re-submission.

  3. Put the plan into action: When the action plan has been carried out into action, the candidate seminary will submit reports of their actions. The GSCP will provide guidelines for such reports. Upon submission, these reports will be reviewed by the GSCP panel. They will either validate/approve the reports in relation to the action plan or they will return them with suggestions for re-submission.

  4. Receive Certification: Upon approval, the GSCP will issue a certificate for display certifying that the seminary has qualified to be named a Green Seminary. Press release information will accompany the certificate.

  5. Maintain Status: Steps will be outlined for the seminary to maintain its status year by year as a Green Seminary and to promote the process of greening among other seminaries.
