Environmental Justice: At the Heart of Care for Creation

Here are some resources on Earth Community at the intersection of Earth-care and social justice: 1) “Principles of Environmental Justice” drafted by the delegates to the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit held on October 24-27, 1991, in Washington DC; 2) a statement on Environmental Justice and Climate Change; 3) an informative article by Nancy Wright on “Christianity and Environmental Justice” with information on regions of the world and relevant bibliography; and 4) links to several eco-justice internet sites.

Earth Sunday 2010

Now is the time to begin preparations for worship, education, and action for Earth Week 2010. These are excellent resources prepared by the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Working Group. Note that several denominations have adapted the basic materials to address the distinctiveness of their own traditions. Go to www.nccecojustice.org and look under resources for Earth Day Sunday.

Environmental Stewardship

Here is a reflection on “The Stewardship of Creation” by David Rhoads.

What is Your Denomination Doing in Caring for Creation?

Here is an annotated list of main sites and resources for different denominations. In addition, for another set of links to care-for-creation resources of different Christian denominations, see also Eco-Justice Ministries at www.eco-justice.org.

Small Group Study Materials from Northwest Earth Institute

Here is information about excellent materials from the Northwest Earth Institute for congregational small-group study. We believe that people will make changes best if they do it with others. We recommend these 4 to 7 session courses from Northwest Earth Institute. They are well-informed, well-organized, and inspirational. Or go directly to www.nwei.org.

Interfaith Resources on Earth-Care.

If you have a desire to learn about other faiths and their approaches to Earth-care, go to the site on the “Forum on Ecology and Religion” at Yale University, where they have been gathering materials, publishing books, and holding conferences on this subject for many years. They have a section for each world religion depicting their basic beliefs, practices, and approach to caring for Earth. Go to www.religionandecology.org and click on the Yale Website and then click on World Religions. This will give you the profiles. The publications section will further alert you to books they have published on the subject. These are excellent resources.
